Back to School

Welcome the new school year with these helpful home automation solutions…

It’s that time of year again! Whether you’re still at work when the kids get home from school or are lost in the flurry of games, practices, music lessons, and errands, smart home technology can provide some amazing solutions for your home and family. Let’s look at some of the options…

Security

There’s no need to hand out a key to everyone who might need it. Smart locks on your door mean your kids, the babysitter, your next door neighbor, and the cleaning lady can all have a code (different codes, if desired) that are entered onto the key pad. You’ll know who has entered the house and when. Someone forget their code and get locked out? You can lock and unlock the door remotely from your smartphone!

Similarly, video doorbells gives you remote access to lock and unlock the door. However, they also allow you to see who’s at the door without actually being home or opening the door. You can speak to visitors from your smartphone, with no one the wiser that you’re not there. It also means the kids can see who’s visiting before opening the door.

With security cameras, we usually think in terms of watching for, and identifying, intruders, but cameras placed inside the home allow you to see that your kids are home and safe (and doing their homework).

Monitoring

Grabbing that afternoon snack, one of the kids didn’t quite get the door to the fridge closed and only catching it hours later, you have to throw everything away. Or maybe your 9-year old decides to make mac-n-cheese and forgets to turn off the stove… Appliance sensors monitor activity in your home, watch for anything out of the ordinary, and send alerts to your smartphone. While you may need to call the kids to shut the fridge, you can turn off that gas stove from your phone.

Likewise, lights can be set to turn off or on depending on activity in the room. Sensors can detect if a faucet has been left running, alerting you via your smartphone. Smart thermostats can be programmed to reach the perfect temperature just about the time the kids get home from school. All can be monitored and adjusted from your smartphone, or simply program routine schedules to save time and money.

Comfort and convenience

Schedule lights to go on in certain rooms with certain types of music to set the scene for getting ready for school, study time, dinner, and bedtime, easing the process along without you having to lift a finger. A different atmosphere can be created for different days of the week, and even different rooms in the house.

Let’s face it, kids and adults aren’t thinking about the same things – especially when it comes to home security, monitoring, and convenience. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t keep them safe, even when they’re home alone. These are just some of the many options that smart home automation offers.
